Approximately 75% of the Big Valley soil composition is cole clay loam, a very dry soil found in basins. The soil formed in alluvium and is derived from mixed rock sources.
Approximately 25% is Still and Talmage gravelly loam. The upper surface layer is composed of brown gravelly and sandy loam. The underlying material, to a depth of 70 inches, is yellowish brown gravelly loam.
